Social Media is Here to Stay

Just a reminder that social media is here to stay.  Pretty impressive clip about how social media and online use has evolved in the UK. It would be interesting to see how much social media is being consumed in North America. [REMOVE NOW]

And another classic Social Media Revolution video from 2009…

And recently from 2010…

Hey Educators – how are YOU taking advantage of social media in your learning environments? It’s just not for branding, advertising & selling. We need to utilize this form of media for education NOW.

Advising Tech Presentations & Resources, Part Deux

To follow up with the Advising 2.0 webinar from May, I was fortunate to help facilitate a couple more sessions on the topic of Advising & Technology for the Innovative Educators group. Here were the topics and presentation resources from the sessions:

1. Advising Technology: The Needs Assessment & Implementation Process with George Steele, Ohio Learning Network

Webinar resources can be found in this The Needs Assessment & Implementation Google Doc.

2. Best Practices in Online Academic Advising Delivery with Clay SchwennUniversity of Washington

Webinar resources can be found in this Best Practices for Online Academic Advising Delivery Google Doc.

Although I enjoyed participating in these sessions, often these online sessions were the starting point for many departmental/campus academic advising groups. It seemed like attendees from these webinars were at various levels of engaging with technology in advising – either just at the drawing board and looking for ideas or in the process for assessment and measurement of current practices. We hoped to provide a springboard for development for some, and hopefully a point of contact, information and resources for others in their dive into advising with technology. In any case, we encouraged participants to stay connected and engaged amongst the great technology in advising network that is starting to thrive online.

Engaging & Communicating with Students Online – Advising 2.0

To be an effective Academic Advisor and Student Affair professional, it is important to engage with your students. Social media and web 2.0 are just a couple of ways to start to share, collaborate and connect with learners. Online communication with our college & university students is one of the first few ways they learn about our resources and services. What does YOUR digital identity (office, department or personal) say about YOU?

Here are a the slides & resources from today’s Innovative Educators webinar – Advising 2.0: Engaging & Communicating with Students Online. I was fortunate to be able to present with @oakvich from the UNLV Academic Success Center, who has some excellent expertise in social media & student success initiatives.

This is the first of 3 webinars for IE’s Advising Technology series. If you are interested in this, stay tuned for more resources for the following upcoming sessions:
